Does the hyper-miler in you crave a diesel car that won’t empty your bank account? Here are your options

The upcoming BS6 norms mean that diesel cars are going to get expensive. This is because they require more expensive additions than petrol cars to make them BS6 compliant. The difference between the two can easily stretch over Rs 1 lakh!

It is not all gloomy though. Here’s a look at diesel cars that are BS6 compliant but are still priced below the Rs 10 lakh mark:

Diesel Price: Rs 6.86 lakh to Rs 7.85 lakh (ex-showroom India)

Rivals: Maruti Swift, Hyundai Grand i10, Tata Altroz

Engine: 1.5-litre (100PS/215Nm)

The Figo has now been around for ages. It was quite the popular car when it was first launched in India but the advent of more hatchbacks in the market meant it lost its sheen. Now, however, at a time when carmakers are shying away from diesel engines, Ford has given the Figo a BS6 diesel engine. The only downside here is that the diesel engine is available only with a manual transmission.

Diesel Price: Rs 6.99 lakh to Rs 9.29 lakh (ex-showroom India)

Rivals - Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai Elite i20

Engine: 1.5-litre (90PS/200Nm)

The Altroz is an all new hatchback from Tata that was recently launched in India. It is available with a petrol and a diesel engine, however, an automatic transmission is missing at this point of time. The salient features of the Altroz are its doors which open the full 90 degrees, space inside the cabin and the quality of materials inside. Its engines however lack that level of refinement that you get from its rivals. It does redeem itself with the fact that it received a five star safety rating for adult occupant protection and a three star safety rating for child occupant protection from Global NCAP.

Diesel Price: Rs 7.34 lakh to Rs 8.19 lakh (ex-showroom India)

Rivals: Mahindra KUV100 and the upcoming Tata HBX

Engine: 1.5-litre (100PS/215Nm)

The Freestyle is essentially a jacked-up Figo and the added ground clearance is great if the roads in your city are riddled with potholes. Apart from that, the Freestyle is also great for traversing hilly terrain, as long as a 4x4 system is not required. The black cladding on the body also gives it an understated look. Like its siblings, the Figo and Aspire, it too misses out on an automatic transmission. It, however, gets safety features such as ESP, Traction Control and Hill Launch Assist over the Figo.

Diesel Price: Rs 7.49 lakh to Rs 8.34 lakh (ex-showroom India)

Rivals: Maruti Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Aura

Engine: 1.5-litre (100PS/215Nm)

The Aspire uses the same engine as the Figo but offers the added convenience of a bigger boot. Its BS6 conversion happened at the same time as the Figo and it too doesn’t get the option of an automatic transmission. The engine in the Aspire has a split personality. If you are in the mood for some relaxed mile-munching, it will do that while delivering a healthy fuel efficiency. But give it the beans and it won’t shy back from showing you a good time, especially with that excellent chassis to support it.

Diesel Price: Rs 7.73 lakh to Rs 9.22 lakh (ex-showroom India)

Rivals: Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Honda Amaze, Ford Aspire

Engine: 1.2-litre (75PS/190Nm)

The Aura was recently launched in India as a premium sedan in the sub-4 metre space. It was an afterthought to the Grand i10 Nios, which was received quite well upon its launch. The Aura is the second sedan from Hyundai in the sub-4 metre space. Not only is its diesel engine BS6 compliant, but so are its two petrol engines as well. And, unlike the Xcent, it gets an automatic transmission for the diesel variant as well.

Diesel Price: Rs 7.55 lakh to Rs 9.95 lakh (ex-showroom India)

Rivals: Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura, Ford Aspire

Engine: 1.5-litre (100PS/200Nm)/(80PS/160Nm for automatic)

Honda’s Amaze was recently introduced with a BS6 diesel engine, allowing it to make it onto this list. The Amaze’s 1.5-litre diesel engine can be had with a manual or an automatic transmission. It is the only diesel car in the sub-Rs 10 lakh space that comes with a conventional automatic gearbox. However, do remember that if you pick the automatic variant, the engine is tuned to deliver substantially less power and torque.

Diesel Price: Rs 8.45 lakh to Rs 12.70 lakh (ex-showroom India)

Rivals: Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Ford EcoSport, Mahindra XUV300

Engine: 1.5-litre (110PS/260Nm)

Unlike its hatchback cousin, the Altroz, the Nexon does offer the convenience of an automatic transmission -- and that too with both petrol and diesel options. It recently underwent a facelift and comes with a full makeover up front, featuring sharper aesthetics in line with its latest siblings. The updated Nexon also adds new features such as a sunroof, digital instrument cluster, and connected tech. And like the Altroz, the Nexon has a five star and three star safety rating from Global NCAP, for adult and child occupants, respectively.

Diesel Price: Rs 8.54 lakh to Rs 11.58 lakh

Rivals: Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300

Engine: 1.5-litre (100PS/215Nm)

The EcoSport started the sub-4 metre SUV segment and in terms of evolution, gradual changes have led it to what it is today. However, this Ford SUV has continued to deliver the goods throughout all that time. That theme continues with the fact that in the BS6 age, when manufacturers are discontinuing diesel engines, Ford continues to offer the EcoSport with a diesel engine that meets the latest emission norms. Now if only we could have an automatic transmission with the diesel engine to go with it.
